Civil War Col. Edward Bacon, of the 6th Michigan Volunteers, first published this book in 1867, while the events he describes were presumably still fresh in his mind. He describes his service in the Department of the Gulf, including time spent in Baton Rouge, Manchac, and Port Hudson, Louisiana, with a great deal of the book detailing the Port Hudson siege. His descriptions are amazingly informative; his impressions (and some very strong opinions) form an amazing and thought-provoking read.

I ordered this book but received one with a different publication date as well as different cover. I had the one I received already, and was hoping this was a different volume or collection. What I received was published 2007, not 2004 as listed.

Use mine all the time. Especially like the clear overlays that show modern-day boundaries and countries for the places referred to in the Bible.

The very reason I look through dusty old boxes of vintage Harlequins at yard sales is to find the ones like this--I love this book! The notes from the back cover may make it sound too predictable, but stay tuned, it's a great story.
(from back cover:) All the way out to Gillgong Station Kerry heard nothing but the praises of Tad Brewster--"good cove," "decent feller," "best boss this side of the North Pole." But that wasn't at all the impression she got when she eventually met him!

This book isn't labeled "Large Print" but it is actually a really large print size (noticeably bigger than a Harlequin Large Print, for instance.)
Just thought anybody with a vision problem might like to know that.

From back cover: "Andrews the adding-machine--is that how you think of me? Put the right instrument in his hand and he'll perform an operation: save his patient from choking and he'll take it for granted. All coolness and efficiency but without human qualities!" Dr. Gil Andrews said to Nurse Clare Edmonds, soon after her arrival at Kahldi Hospital in Kashmir. Nurse Clare's feelings for Dr. Gil were in fact very different from her feelings for an adding-machine--but how could she tell him so?

Very helpful book, lots of illustrations and interesting facts.

An excellent read with only one negative note: it would have been great if there were more footnotes to identify who the people mentioned were. There were numerous footnotes, but they usually identified the soldiers or battles mentioned. There was a list of some but not all family members and friends at the beginning of the book, but more explanation of characters would have been helpful. However, it was an absorbing account of the war years.

This issue's Bible studies are from: A Heart Like His by Beth Moore (lessons from the life of Israel's King David), and The Papa Prayer, by Larry Crabb.

I wouldn't call this a Large Print version. The lines do have some space between them but the type isn't very big if someone needs large print.
(For instance, the type in this book is clearly smaller than Harlequin's LoveInspired Mysteries that are labeled "Larger Print," and way smaller than the "True Large Print" versions of the LoveInspired Mysteries.

Love Susan Fox's books, this one included--wish she had more titles available.

Beautiful cover and attractive layout, with a scripture and well-written devotional for each day, plus space to record Biblical insights, prayer requests, and answers to prayer for the day.
One cautionary note, this edition is printed in a fairly small font. If somebody needs a good-sized print, this may not be the right version of this excellent devotional guide and journal.

My copy is paperback, not hardcover. Excellent devotionals for each day, from selected Psalms. As a bonus, beautiful color photographs throughout. I enjoyed having this as part of my bedtime reading.

Excerpt from back cover: Her new life was not proving easier...

The description given is not for this book; maybe it's for another volume in this series. From the back cover: "On a daring mission, search-and-rescue specialist Heidi Warren and her team step onto an icy Alaska mountaintop...and right into a trap. A stranded gang of thieves holds them at gunpoint, forcing them to serve as guides along the treacherous path."
Very good read, hard to put it down!
