The story behind the story: Those who saw the made-for-tv movie on this subject will enjoy this read. An introduction to a twisted, two-faced lifestyle lived by a man smart enough to pull it off...until...
I will not spoil it for those who don't know about this case.
Good book,Good story.

Very good, first hand account of the Chosin Reservoir campaign.
Brutal conditons, as well as lack of proper gear/equipment and supplies made this an especially tough fight................that 2 1/2 yrs. later ended in a truce!

Excellent book. Great "memoir" of aviators in the "background" during the Vietnam conflict. Definately a must read.
I never read a book twice. This one was an exception. It's that good!

A great memoir that follows a more "fireside" storytelling style. Very good detail and pictures.
A look at the Vietnam conflict through the eyes of a foot soldier; yet with the constant eye on the positive personal outcome... Believe me, the author accomplishes this mission quite succesfully.
A worthwhile read; especially for the history buffs out there.

Good story for those who are interested in the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II.
Rambling text of both personal and professional observations. Not very technical, but considering the original publish date of 1956(short story from 1942); this work was censored at the very least, if not outright laced with propaganda.
Even knowing this, I did not find it too distracting from the story itself; being really about the Human element in armed conflicts and extreme conditions.
Well worth reading.

Similar to "Riverine: A brown water sailor in the Delta, 1967" by Don Sheppard.
A good part of this book is devoted to casting aspersions on Mr. Sheppard's book/story. This book claims not to be a "Memoir"; but more historical. I believe it is more the former.
I feel it meets that standard, but something is lost when you must run others down to prop yourself up.
Otherwise; I like Mr. Goldsmith's Book/Story and would recomend it to any Militay History/Vietnam War buff.

A must read. Thouroghly researched. Not overbearing in presentation. Very intelligently written; not condescending in any way.
An important part of history almost unknown too many, especially here in the US.

Good book, great story. Good perspective from a command point of view.... a commander who went out into the field and participated!
Great, quick reading. Doesn't drone on with endless details. Plenty of detail IS included.
NOTE: Photo of book cover shot included on this site is distorted. If I knew how, would upload a picture of my copy.

Great read, great research. Very thorough, covers all the investigations and facts gathered to date. Without spouting opinion, Mr. Johnson delivers the narrative smoothly, allowing the reader to decide how these facts fit in to the official narrative of the USS Scorpion, which the US Navy lists as "Lost by storm or perils of the sea".
I highly recommend this book. A must read for the Submarine aficionado, or the Veteran Boat Sailor.

This book is a bit alarmist. Information is repetitive at times and dated (late '90s, early 2000s). While it may be true, the bad port deals with China at Long Beach, The Panama Canal, etc. are done deals at this point. Not much we can do about it. Write your congressman/senator if you are concerned about it.
Maybe if there is another book with more up to date material (an "in the news" style) book; it would seem more urgent/necessary to react to.
