This is a *lovely* little book, filled with creative artwork and poignant true stories about the author's small flock of chickens. Having had pet chickens in the past, I know her characterizations of her chickens are spot on. When one gets to know chickens individually, one sees that they have personalities, feelings, emotions, joy of life, etc., etc., etc., just as we humans and our dogs and cats do. Even my husband--who isn't much of a reader--enjoyed this book immensely!

Going by all the glowing comments on the dust jacket, I had high hopes that I'd like or even love this book. It was described with words like beautiful, poignant, stunning, exceptional, etc., and written superbly.
Well, those reviewers must have read a different book. I absolutely hated this one. I found it dark, depressing, gross, etc. To care about the characters in a book, I have to like them, which I couldn't do with this book. Also, I enjoy lots of dialogue/conversations in books. There was almost none of that here. Ugh.
You may like this book, but I will never read another book written by this author.

This is a heartbreaking story--fictional, but told with a lot of truth. For me, it started somewhat slowly, then picked up to become a real page-turner.
I often say about humans, "We are a despicable species." After reading this book, my feelings have not changed.
