Help Center - How to use the Club Wish List

Search Terms:

The Club Wish List is the list of all books currently being wished for by PBS members (all of the books currently on PBS Wish Lists).  You can search the Club Wish List by placing your cursor over Search in the toolbar at the top of the site, and clicking Club Wish List in the menu that drops down.

How to use the Club Wish List

  • Searching the Club Wish List:  There are three  Search fields on the Club Wish List page.
    • Keyword search:  You can enter the ISBN, title, author, genre, publisher, binding type, publication year, keyword in the description, Large Print...just about anything goes here.  Then click Search
      • remember to check the ISBN on any search results!  the Wish List matches books according to ISBN.
    • Title search:  Click any letter or number in the list to see all Wished for items whose titles begin with that character.
      • remember to check the ISBN on the search results!  The Wish List matches books according to ISBN, not title.
    • Genre search: Choose the genre from the dropdown menu, then choose subgenre from the field that appears to the right.  Then click Go.
  • Posting a book from the Club Wish List:
    • If you see an item on the Club Wish List whose title, ISBN, author and booktype matches the ones on your book, you can click .
    • You will be asked to confirm that the ISBN (either 10 or 13-digit version) matches the one on your book.
      • If not, you must not Post this book this way!  You will need to post it from the Post Books area to ensure that you are posting the correct book.
      • Posting a Wish Listed book that you don't have is against PBS rules, and if the requestor marks this as a Problem (Wrong Book) transaction, you will have to give the credit back to her!

Tips for Using the Club Wish List:

  • If you post a book that you see on the Club Wish List, but it is not offered to a wishing member immediately after posting:
    • This means that the ISBN on your book does not match the ISBN that is being Wished for.
    • Some members are looking for specific versions of books--they want a hardcover to match the series of books on their keeper shelf, or they want a paperback because it is easier to hold.  Or they want an audiobook to listen to in the car.
    • It is not okay to post your book incorrectly (using the wrong ISBN or booktype) to match an item on the Club Wish List--the requestor will probably be disappointed, will mark your book as a Wrong Book Received, and you will have to give the credit back.  Too many problem transactions will jeopardize PBS membership, so be sure to post your books correctly!
  • If you have an alternate version of a title on the Club Wish List:
    • If your book has an ISBN, it is most likely linked to the other ISBNs for this title in the database.
    • When an item is Posted into the system that is linked to a WIshed-for ISBN, all members on the Wish List for any ISBN of that book get an alert email offering them your book!
    • If your book does not have an IBSN (if you had to enter it with a customized listing), it is not linked to any other item in the database, so that "similar-to-wished-for-item" email alert will not be triggered when you post your book.
      • You can't contact a Wishing member directly to ask if your version would be acceptable to them; we feel this would cause chaos, with members getting PMs from other members about books they have not Wish Listed and do not necessarily want
      • But you can "advertise" your book in the Book Bazaar Discussion Forum: post a topic there with the title of the book and the words "Different ISBN" in it and most likely your book will be snapped right up!
  • If you see a book on the Club Wish List that matches the title and binding type of the book you have, but it has a "short ISBN" (an ISBN of 5 digits):
    • "Short ISBNs" are the PBS-assigned numbers that track books entered into the database without an ISBN
    • Non-ISBN items are posted by members with customized listings so that the information on the book listing in the database is correct.  Members post books without ISBNs because:
      • The book doesn't have an ISBN
      • The book has an ISBN, but the booktype on the listing in the database is wrong (usually, the publisher assigned the same ISBN to more than one version of a title in this case)
      • The book has an ISBN, but it is not known to the PBS database (the database gets updated all the time, and ISBNs do get added regularly)
      • The book has an ISBN but it is described in the PBS database as Large Print, and the copy the member has is regular-sized font (again, the publisher chose to use the same ISBN for two versions of the book in this case)
    • If you see that ONLY short-ISBN/non-ISBN versions of a title are wished for (and no ISBN version of the title is on the Club Wish List):
      • This usually means that the book was in hot demand at one time, and Wishing members put all of the listings for that title in the database onto their Wish Lists.
        • They didn't realize that the Wish List works by ISBN, so putting a "short ISBN" on your Wish List means that you will be alerted ONLY about that specific copy of the book, posted by that original member.  It is possible to have a match on your Wish List for a non-ISBN item if someone has gotten it and then reposts it from their TBR Pile or Repost Books area, but it is unlikely, just by the odds.
        • A short-ISBN/non-ISBN item on a Wish List will also not trigger a Wish List offer of a similar item (same title but different ISBN) if it becomes available--short-ISBN/non-ISBN items are not linked to any other items in the database, even if the titles match.
      • Then as those wishers got ISBN versions of this title, they were removed from the Wish List for the ISBN versions of the title.  The system did not automatically remove the short-ISBN/non-ISBN items from their Wish Lists when they marked the ISBN versions received (again, because short-ISBN/non-ISBN items are not linked to any other items in the database)
      • So the short-ISBN/non-ISBN item on the Club Wish List (without any ISBN versions of that title being wished for) could be considered a Wish List "orphan"...although it appears on members' Wish Lists, it is not really wished for.
      • We encourage our members, as always, to keep an eye on their Wish Lists, so that no-longer-wanted items don't linger there.  But not everyone is good about this.
