Marly's father was a prisoner of war and was released. He is jumpy, irritable, depressed. and anxious. Marly's mother takes him up into the mountains to an old farm mother owns. The clean air and a neighboring family changes his personality to be more pleasant. It's amazing what the outdoors and kindness will do to help a broken soul.
This book won the Newberry Medal for children's books. The story is excellent, it covers history in Pennsylvania of the Maple syrup industry, how people once lived in rural areas, and how the outdoors and kindness can heal a depressed man. Plus the outdoors and many types of animal are covered. The author was gifted and knowledgable in many areas.
Great book and gift.
