The novel starts with a somewhat normal event: a solar eclipse, being viewed around the world. The reader sees the perspectives of several people, including a government operative. Much of the action, however, is going on below the surface of the ocean where Rollins's hero, Jack Kirkland, is attempting an underwater salvage mission. Solar flares from the eclipse have started a chain reaction of natural disasters including earthquakes and raging fires. Kirkland is asked to help rescue the president's plane which went down over the Pacific Ocean.
Rollins writes a rather intelligent thriller, where Kirkland faces not only the challenges of helming a salvage operation on the open ocean but a duplicitous former colleague who wants to see the world go to war as well as fighting the memory of his lost love. He's aided by an archaeologist, Karen, who may know what the mysterious formations are on the ocean floor that Kirkland's team runs into. Some of Rollins's books are silly but this one, along with Amazonia, cements him as a first-rate action writer.
