Though a well concieved and interesting book... "Hero's Song" does suffer in several ways. First... Edith Pattou (whom I LOVE as an author... her novel "East" was GORGEOUSLY written!) is a wonderful author! After so thoroughly enjoying "East", I was very disappointed in the writing style for "Hero's Song". In some places it is just downright choppy and hard to read. To me... it's very clear that this novel is one of Edith's first.
The characters are well fleshed out... and interesting... Yet I have to agree with a review I read on Amazon.com, they are very "cookie cutter"... and almost seem to be morphed from other Fantasy novels. Which is sorta disconcerting if you can't get visions of "Lord of the Rings" out of your head as you read.
And yet... The story was compelling... it diffenately kept both me (and my husband) reading. If you are an avid fantasy reader... I definately recommend picking these books up. However... if you are a staunch backer of the "creators" of the genre... you might want to pass. Though they are original in their idea... they are nothing spectacular.
Again... a good and entertaining read... but in a genre that is full of hero and adventure stories... there isn't much to make these two stand out...
Though I wonder... is this intended to be a trilogy?? If so... where is the third book???
"Hero's Song" was published in 1991 and "Fire Arrow" in 1998... I think we are due the third installment!
