I just finished listening to Gwendy's Button Box, and at times was just riveted with my stomach tingling with apprehension. Listened to most of it while in a pool and I'd catch myself sinking because I'd stopped moving. Now, I don't think it was because the story was any real great shakes, however, the narrator, Maggie Siff, was just so perfect for this read. Also, I've always thought King's talent lie not so much with his talent for horror, but his skill with writing children. Chizmar actually wrote the ending--as told in the interview with the authors at the end of the book--and the transition was seamless.
