Probably the weakest of French's novels, despite a scorching final chapter.
The crime setting off the book is suitably horrendous -- three members of a single family murdered, the only survivor hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Protagonist Mike "Scorcher" Kennedy is on the case with a rookie partner, and things roll quickly to an arrest.
Anyone who has ever read French knows this is nowhere the end of the story, but that's where the problems start. Things bog down for the reader, the blind alleys and red herrings begin to seem tedious, and even after Kennedy realizes something is very, very wrong it takes forever to get there.
