This is a well-constructed novel with some suspense thrown in. This book was so engaging that I read it in less than 24-hours. This story opens with the reading of the will of the Fourth Earl of Worthing. The Fifth Earl of Worthing, Stratford Tunstall, finds out that his predecessor has given the most valuable piece of land on the estate to his ward, Eleanor Daventry.

She is a penniless petite miss who received her education through the auspices of the Fourth Earl. Unfortunately, she must marry in order to inherit. Eleanor is of a mind to become a governess or a teacher, but not a wife, unless she loves the individual. Stratford, drunk, asks Eleanor to marry him (so he can bring the piece of land into his estate). She is underwhelmed with the offer.

Stratford, who cashed out from the military, is still helpful to the War Office and they are looking for a traitor. Lord Ingram and Stratford start the difficult process of watching their gentlemen friends to find the treasonous person or persons.

This was a page-turner with lots of secondary characters and interesting situations. This is my first book by Jennie Goutet but it won't be the last.
