Such a intelligent, interesting book. It begins in a castle in Corenia (fictional country near Czechslovakia) in the last days of World War II as the Red Army moves into Central Europe. The author follows the fates of those who arrive at the castle seeking shelter, an abandoned baby of unknown origin, a young girl who arrives drenched in blood, a young comrade, the owner of the castle who is a count, and a group of Russian trained partisans. The lives of these characters (and their offspring) are touched by this experience and all roads lead back to the country.
