I eagerly awaited this book like many other Breed Series fans; however, it was not as good as I hoped it would be. I gave it 3 stars b/c enough of the old characters appear to make the tale interesting and keep forward moving on the whole Breed story. In addition, there are GREAT scenes with the Vanderale's en familie - mom, pop, sons, etc., which greatly redeem the novel and reveal some surprises.
I've read it several times thinking that perhaps I missed something important or revelatory facts re Rachel, the heroine's character. I didn't. A more unlikeable, unsympathetic and NARCISSTIC mate would be hard to write. I can't say more w/o revealing a spoiler. It's not the first time Leigh has brought in an unlikeable mate. In Bengal's Heart (two stars), she casts as a mate Cassa Hawkins, who was a borderline irritant/psuedo-villain in 3 prior novels.
Lion's Heat is weakened by something the writer does that is unworthy of her talent for storytelling. She does not expand or color in the Rachel's character. Rachel has no backstory, no character development at all. Page one of novel should really be page 50 or 100. The novel starts in the middle of a crisis situation that the reader knows nothing about. Yet the crisis is so important every major player is on the scene.
Back to Rachel, let me share what Ms. Leigh tells us about Rachel.
1) Parents are killed when she is young and she and her sister lose everything b/c her parents made no plans for the future.
2) She was raised/lived w/older sister Diana. Diana is now a take-no-prisoners mercenary.
3) She had an affair w/Devon Marshal in Switzerland, which resulted in her baby.
4) When she was a teenager, she organized Kane Tyler's office, etc. How is that believable?
5) She is able to use a vibrator competently.
You now know what I know about Rachel. You'll learn nothing else in the novel. Oh, number 6, she's a good mom.
I left out my comments about inconsistencies and contradictions in Breed lore, but Leigh scores so low on the Laurell K. Hamilton Inconsistent Scale (10=author is brain dead to 1=author must be tired.) Leigh score on the LKH inconsistency scale is a 6 - not for the number of inconsistencies but rather for their importance in Breed Lore. Otherwise, Leigh's score would be a 3.
Lion's Heat is worth a read but I personally think Jonas was shortchanged.
