A highly emotional tale. Alexi was very angry with Elysse throughout most of the story as he blamed her for death of his best friend. Great story telling at first, but I felt Alexi's anger was drawn out way too long, which became frustrating. He was also deliberately cruel to Elysse. He didn't earn any high points with me by being unfaithful during his marriage especially since Elysse refused to take a lover. Her intense pain and loneliness caused by his abandonment is very apparent. Alexi was too much of a stubborn blockhead for me, and their relationship was needlessly volatile. Even the last minute abduction scenario at the end--the author's attempt for the couple to realize how much they meant to each other as well as to showcase Alexi's promise to always protect Elysse--seemed rather a forced way to wrap up the story. 3.2 stars
