I'm not sure why Theroux is so popular as a travel writer. Yes, he is adventurous in the sense that he travels alone on itineraries that are not common for Americans. However, he approaches other cultures in a sour-tempered, spiteful mood and he tends to be extremely judgmental rather than curious and tolerant. Not sure I'm going to finish this book because of that flaw.
