This is the second novel featuring Emily Tempest, but probably okay if you haven't read the first, just read the jacket copy. Wonderfully vivid Australian outback setting, and an interesting character in Emily. She's so impulsive that I cringed more than once, and towards the middle of the book it leads her into a really horrific episode. Lots of odd and really odd characters to suspect whodunit. I liked how Hyland contrasted the two parts of Emily's life. The motive was believable, but the ending was really weird. And...I don't know...while there is a lot I liked, this book took me weeks to finish. I'd read two pages and put it down. I'm not good at being analytical about what I read, so I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just didn't work for me.
