I had the privilege to listen to the unabridged version of HUNTED courtesy of Macmillan Young Listeners. With a 40-minute one way commute for work, I am able to spend the time enthralled in other worlds in what would otherwise be a dull trip. HUNTED did not disappoint in taking me to another world for the 9 discs that span the story. At the beginning here, let me apologize if I misspell any characters or locations. Listening to a story does not give you the physical pages to refer back to for reference.
Being unfamiliar with Zoey Redbird and her group of fledglings, Jenna Lamia was able to pull me into the story quickly on, and make me a part of their vampire world. I have read other reviews for the HOUSE OF NIGHT series, and some complain that there is too much repetitive background information. Being new to the series (entering here for the fifth novel), I found the amount of background information perfect for a first-timer. Granted, there are areas that are still gray in my knowledge of Zoey's beginnings, but the background provided was enough to allow me to follow along without feeling lost.
Jenna Lamia's voice is young and fresh. Her voice is able to take on the youthful quality that is Zoey. Wise beyond her years, Zoey is still a teenager, and is still a fledgling. Jenna is able to personify Zoey perfectly. On top of having to tackle Zoey, the main character, Jenna has to convince the reader that she is multiple other members of the story. Some novels have a handful of characters to deal with. Ms. Lamia has quite a wide group to portray.
Though Zoey is the primary focus throughout the novel, I have to admit that it was the secondary characters that Jenna takes on that I enjoyed the most. Ms. Lamia was able to bring life to the twins Erin and Shaunee and Stevie Rae (all three given great southern twangs), Stark with his tormented soul, Heath with his crazy jock persona, and my personal favorite, Cremitia. Ms. Lamia gives her a city wise no-nonsense attitude which comes across loud and clear in her reading.
For those new to audiobooks, HUNTED will be a real treat. The dark stormy setting is felt throughout the entire length of the story. The action builds and the anticipation is probably more pronounced hearing the story, rather than reading it. For audiobook enthusiasts, HUNTED will not disappoint. Ms. Lamia is a pro, and the story moves at the perfect pace.
My only regret is that I haven't discovered this series sooner than the fifth book! I will have to find the time to start from the beginning. Though, unfortunately, I believe book four is the only other one available on audiobook at this time. However, book six, TEMPTED, will also be released on audiobook in October 2009. I know I am already looking forward to it!
