Creative tale of a haunted house that sought to drive its occupants mad. A little on the gruesome side. Having read the author's more recent title first (The Ravenous--5 stars), I see a pattern of isolated protagonists with self-destructive behaviors and dysfunctional families, which makes me wonder if her next book (Nightingale) will be similar. Women in the Walls definitely moves quickly with one creepy scene after another, but overall it felt like an exercise in forcing the shock factor that disappointingly led to a flat and melancholy conclusion. Reach for The Ravenous instead. 3.5 stars.
