Just when I thought that there was no need for one more WWII story. A Jewish mother, boarding a train, hands her young son off to a Christian woman to save him. Neither is sure this is the life that they would choose. Well-fleshed characters, personal story without gratuitous scenes. Story is told from three decades later and going back in time to the difficulties encountered trying to save just one child. Excellent first novel, story will stay with me.
