Historical fiction. Set in the WWII era; Oak Ridge, TN is the site of a large government compound. The book follows the lives of several workers from the area - young women working at the compound away from home for the first time, black laborers working construction jobs and living in substandard housing, scientists and physicists - all sworn to secrecy and not knowing exactly what they were working on. Little did they know they were helping to refine the uranium for the atomic bomb that was eventually used in Japan to end the war. Good read!
