First in a trilogy. PIcked it up at the library book sale because I recognized the author's name and it's a signed copy. I've liked Dana Stabenow's mysteries and while I usually don't read much outside SF and mystery genres, it was certainly worth a dollar. It's short and fast reading. I liked the setting, all the characters are understandable, and the pacing is pretty good. That said, you don't want to be too nitpicky here. A 16-yr-old girl would certainly not be given the kind of freedom Johanna has, and no matter who her father is, she's not going to get much respect. A pure white racehorse is going to get you noticed very quickly. There's enough history to make it interesting - I did look up a couple things while reading - but no lectures. My biggest gripe is that it ends on a cliffhanger.
