This is the first in a series of mysteries set in sounthern New Mexico featuring Bill Gaston as the Undersheriff of Posadas County. The book is a slim volume but it pulls you so far into New Mexico that you can feel the red sand in your nostrils. Gaston is a shrewd and curmudgeonly man and his underling, Estelle Reyes-Guzman is smart as a whip. Together they work to solve mysteries in a huge and sparsely populated region. Great procedural stuff and a great start to the series. I highly recommend Steven Havill.
