Excellent read. While all of the Dracula lore was interesting I never felt any sense of being sucked in. It was, however, a wonderful mechanism to show Constantinople/Istambule
and the Balkans at four stages of history: Rossi's trip in the 30s, Paul's in the 50s, the described history in the 1400s when all was in flux between the Byzantines and the Ottomans, and the lightly drawn picture of Paul's daughter and Barley's search in the 70s. The book had a grand scope, finely drawn characters, and engaging writing. The Dracula tale held all of it together. I recommend it. Leslie Anne
