Paige's mother left her when she was only 5 years old. When she becomes a mother herself, Paige is frightened that she will be a terrible mother and that she will no longer have a life of her own.
Throughout this story, we see the troubles facing Paige and her husband, Nicholas. Nicholas is on a fast track to becoming a surgical genius and spends more and more of his time away from home. When the baby arrives, Paige is on her own to deal with the day to day trials of raising a newborn.
What bothered me most about this book is that, while Paige is flawed and makes her share of mis-steps, all of the blame seems to reside squarely on her shoulders. Nicholas, to me, seems to be a pompous ass who never even bothers trying to understand what life has been like for Paige. I also didn't like the way Paige's future is painted as either having to stay with her husband and child, or "run away" and be with her past.
