Definitely one of Heinlein's classic sci-fi novels, it is right up there with Starship Troopers.

A young slave boy is purchased by an old, almost penniless cripple, who teaches him about respect, and even love. The young boy grows into a young man who discovers he can make great changes to the galaxy, but only if he gives up that which he loves most.
