This is the final book of the Miss Wolfraston's Ladies series (see below). The author fills her stories with interesting characters and backstories. Aunt Hester is a case in point. Ms. Hambly's characters grow over the course of the story(ies). Georgianna was a cold fish at the beginning of the series. In this book, her backstory explains her behavior.

During that time, people tended to live shorter lives. Perhaps that is why authors think nothing of choosing a mate for a seventeen-year-old female. I quake to think what my choice would have been at seventeen.

I'm delighted the author moved the heroine to a new locale. Her home was horrible. Georgianna had a father she rarely saw and a mother who hated the sight of her. Aunt Hester's house, where she moved, was interesting because of the diversity of the characters there. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
