I fell halfway in love with the Kendrick clan when first introduced (The Highlander's Princess Bride, the final novel in the Improper Princesses series), but Royal's story made it solid deal. The title alone gives a good sense of what to expect--a battered hero who would move mountains to protect the woman he loves. It gave this girl all kinds of delicious shivers. The only hitch for me was the prickly Ainsley. Stubborn and with an irksome habit of hiding behind a cool, arrogant demeanor (to hide her vulnerability, of course), I simply couldn't warm up to her. The biggest draw was always Royal and his family. The romance was a little slow building (for understandable reasons), but I never questioned Royal's constant love for Ainsley. The tale really highlights the tight-knit family in the final quarter to most satisfying results. Despite it's slightly bittersweet ending, I look forward to reading more of the Kendrick Highlanders. 3.5 stars.
