Maybe I'm missing something here, or a lot of somethings, but honestly I didn't find this one to be nearly what it's cracked up to be. I read it expecting...Well, y'know, a couple of feel-good archetypes smooshed together, with plot twists to crash into and cry over, but clear up in the face of Cannie's indomitable spirit, and obstacles that I could imagine throwing myself at with determination and good cheer aplenty.

It's like the skeleton of the story, the one that's never as important as the gist -or, perhaps, soul- were put in place with that notion, but with an undertone that I couldn't help comparing to something like She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb.
Everyone follows the motions, with a -somewhat- happy ending, but I was left with the same feeling of vague misery and slight repulsion. Nothing concrete enough to put my finger on, but enough to twist my mood a little whenever I think about it.

Maybe this is just my reaction to 'real' stories in general, and I'm better off sticking to unlikely and delightful, but I'm convinced that, somewhere, there's a middle ground that doesn't make me feel a little queasy.
