What a cool concept for a fantasy - this is excellent world-building. Excellent sense of place and the world situation is described very well. Good cast of likeable and mostly believable characters too. I loved the idea that the Dine; clan traits can manifest themselves in real form. The twists in the story were obvious if you've read any Navajo myth at all, but I enjoyed them regardless. Kai's other ability was so obvious I could not believe Maggie didn't twig to it right off. Pretty good pacing although it does bog down a little in a couple spots, good action, it's easy to see why this was nominated for many awards. A couple of "buts" for me though. Maggie is so similar to other women in this genre. Young, badass, but her self-confidence is a veneer that can be shattered by a man. I've read too many like her. A minor issue: I also found my reading to stumble a bit over the Dine; language - I have no idea how to pronounce the special symbols so my eye just skipped past them.
Good as it is, I have so many other series I'm in the middle of that I may not look for the next. But it's very good...so I might.
