Dr. Sara Linton returns to her hometown in Grant County to visit family for the Thanksgiving Holiday. When a college student is found murdered and her assailant arrested, Sara is called to the police station to help calm down the perpetrator. What she finds is a 19-year-old dead in his cell of an apparent suicide. Blaming Detective Lena Adams for not searching Tommy Brahams before putting him in his cell, Sara notifies the Georgia Bureau of Investigations about the negligent detective. Investigator Will Trent is sent to examine the evidence. Lena insists that Tommy confessed to the murder, but evidence shows he couldn't have been the culprit.
This book ties together Slaughter's Will Trent series with her Grant County series. As usual we have an intense mystery. I was never sure where the story was going or what we were going to discover. The identity of the villain was a big surprise for me. I certainly wouldn't have guessed it. But what makes this book a winner is the great character development. Slaughter takes flawed characters that we have known for several books and makes us care about them. (Yes, even Lena.) She also takes characters that I had come to like and makes me see them in a different light. I highly recommend this book, but I suggest you read the Grant County series before reading this book. My rating: 5 Stars.
