Who is Jade de Jong? As someone who jumped into Jassy Mackenzie's mystery series featuring this female South African detective at the 4th book, this question was more important to me than perhaps some other more loyal readers. Would I be hopelessly lost having missed the first 3 books in this series?

I'm happy to report that, no no prior knowledge of Ms. Jade de Jong (or of Ms. Jassy Mackenzie, for that matter) is required in order to enjoy Pale Horses - as already stated, the 4th book in the series. A base jumper is killed when her chute doesn't open, and Jade is hired to investigate. A farming community has re-appropriated land lost to their tribe long ago perhaps as far back as the Boer War but has entirely vanished from the earth without any evidence as to what happened, or why. A young mother is being blackmailed to chaffeuring a hired killer around the city. And Ms. De Jong is having relationship troubles.

Somehow, all of these various threads are explored and resolved (with exception of the last) within the 297 pages of this book. An enjoyable read I'm planning to search out the first 3 books in this series, and hope to see more from Jassy Mackenzie in the future!

4 stars.
