I've followed Reginald Hill's Dalziel-Pascoe series for years and have always enjoyed those novels, so I had some reservations about this stand-alone. I'm so glad I gave it a try; I was quickly hooked, and actually found it more complex and fascinating than the series novels. With frequent plot twists and turns, characters multi-layered and full of contradictions, "The Woodcutter" keeps you guessing and involved to the end. Along the way, it also neatly skewers those driven by money and its pursuit. I hope the book is discovered by a wider audience; its appeal is by no means limited to mystery lovers.
