Claidi is a servant in the house to a cruel spoiled young woman who dislikes her servants, beats them and calls them names. But Claidi has spunk and sometimes speaks out which gets her into trouble. Will her life always be this way?
All changes when a hot air balloon appears over the city. The soldiers shoot it down and put its occupant into the dungeon. He is a handsome young man who lives in a distant city. Claidi releases him and runs away with him, beginning a life of adventure.
They travel across the Waste meeting different tribes who trick or help them. The most frightening was the tribe that planned to offer Claidi as a sacrifice. Escaping, the two travel on to the distant city he calls home but what she finds there is far different from what she expected. This is good fantasy for the young reader.
