I read this with a buddy in my online book club, The Reading Cove.
I thought it was an OK read; it held my interest throughout. However, the setting was really weak. I never felt I was in 1400s Italy. For all the ambiance in the narrative, this story could've been taking place anywhere.
The main leads, teenagers Luca and Isolde, had next to no chemistry, and Luca, especially, managed to come across as very underdeveloped, vague, and once removed from the reader.
Isolde is dealt a harsh hand in the beginning, but we don't see much redemption for her in this book; there are very loose ends at the finish...supposedly so you'll continue with the series to get the carrot.
The first two-thirds was better than the last part, where it just got strange...and rather repetitive with Luca's "inquiry" into a wolf terrorizing a small town.
I'm torn between a B-/C+ on this one. It wasn't boring, but it didn't exactly leave me wanting more either. I doubt I'll continue the series. Too many other books waiting to be read. :)
