I was impressed by this book. Kleypas is not my favorite writer although I do enjoy a few things by her. She has a tendency to reuse characters and plotlines and I find that insulting. Albeit she did fall back on illness as a form of bonding here (she uses it in her historic romances a lot), I didn't mind it as much because it wasn't so melodramatic.
If you are looking for a typical romance, you will be surprised. This is more like a Cinderella story. So the first half of the book is set in Liberty's teenage years and her relationship with Hardy. I actually loved this part of the book because so much of what happened formed who she is as an adult. I thought Kleypas took a risk by spending a lot of time here when Liberty might not end up with Hardy at the end, but it was worth it to me. So much of this book is really just about Liberty and how she dealt with life (in some ways more like chick lit than romance).
The second part of the story is mostly about Liberty being flung full-fledge into adulthood when her mother dies and she has to take care of her little sister. Kleypas did a great job of showing how although Liberty was already more of a mother than a sister beforehand, there is a huge difference in being soley responsible for a young child. Gabe enters on in the later half and I felt their relationship was somewhat rushed compared to what was spent on Hardy, but it was still good. Of course Hardy returns and tries to win Liberty back and she has to picked between two millionaires. (Hard to feel sorry for a girl with choices like that).
I spent so much time in this review breaking down the book because I can't emphasis enough that it isn't written as your typical romance. It works here because it is written in Liberty's perspective and the reader needs to know why it was hard for her to choose between the two men, especially because Hardy played such a major role in her life.
