I could not enjoy this book, though I really wanted to based upon a friend's recommendation. The main character, Bella Swan, is just plain unlikable and dull. She's a morose, painfully (for the reader) self-absorbed teenager who's main attraction to Edward the vampire is based upon her lust and admiration for his incredible looks and marble-like (in feel as well as look) body. Oh, and he saved her from being squished by a van, but I kind of wished he hadn't after the zillionth reference Bella made to his gorgeous good looks. Edward as a character is defined by being moody and not much else, which is not surprising since his character's sole purpose seems to be to make Bella swoon, occasionally save her life and constanty tell her he's not good for her. While teenage girls may identify with Bella, I just wanted to slap her and tell her to stop obsessing over a dead guy! If you want romance, read anything by Jane Austen instead; you'll get much more out of it.
