This is a very readable book about the difficult subject of the grieving process from a widower's perspective. Edward navigates life without his beloved Bee with difficulty, and Wolitzer does a good job of describing the stages of grief and the ways in which those left behind attempt to move on after the death of a spouse. There are moments of poignancy and levity when he enters the dating world, and the readers' compassion for Edward's loneliness grows with each new experience in the dating world. I did have to suspend disbelief when the relationship with Laurel resumed; however, in the final measure, I enjoyed An Available Man and Edward's progression to fulfillment.
