Knight Tenebrae (Knight, Bk 1)

This book has fascinating descriptions of what it was like to be a knight at the time of Robert the Bruce. The story-telling device of having an American soldier tell the story works very well. The author was able to describe everything without using the language of the time. I enjoyed the love story between Alex and Lindsay. In particular, because as the story is told from Alex's point of view, Lindsay's thoughts and feelings are hidden. We, the readers, don't know anymore about what Lindsay thinks of him than Alex does. The conclusion is surprisingly effective because of that. The weakness of this book is the fantastical stuff. How and why they are in the past is not very interesting. The author would have been better off not trying to explain at all.
