After a fire destroys his masterpiece-in-progress - a voluminous work on world extinction - along with what's left of his unfulfilling marriage, Will Mendelsohn must rethink his entire life. He decides to write another book, this one from an eyewitness's perspective. Armed with maps of the world and a hope that only despair can inspire, he begins his odyssey abroad. In Assam, India, to visit a friend of his mother's, Will meets Grace Tagore, an American screenwriter married to a prosperous Indian merchant. Drawn together by their haunted family histories, Will and Grace drift into a passionate affair just as Assam erupts in political turmoil, igniting a chain of events that transforms both their lives.
