This story revolves around an Amish teen who is accused of giving birth to a baby boy out of wedlock and then smothering him. As the story unfolds, it becomes more riveting, as her friends, family, lawyer, prosecution, doctors, psychiatrists, and even she herself try to figure out exactly what happened that morning. The result is a fascinating but sad story with a bit of a surprise twist at the end.
This is the second book I have read by Jodi Picoult, and plan to read more. I enjoy the mystery aspect of the stories I have read so far, and am pleased that the endings have not been entirely predictable. I think one of Picoult's strengths is that she portrays her characters realistically. They have strengths and weaknesses, and are complex enough that it is hard to judge whether their actions were wrong or right.
I had a hard time putting this one down.
