Regina Scott has decided to plumb the depths of American history by exploring the reasons behind women choosing to go West with Asa Mercer (Mercer was a promoter who convinced women to leave Eastern cities and towns to take a chance on a new life in the West). This particular story is about Catherine Stanway, a nurse trained by her physician father, who wants to make a difference in the West. Unlike most of the 'Mercer belles,' Catherine has no interest in marrying.
Drew Wallin, although 29 years of age, isn't interested in marrying either. He has been the protector and provider (for 10 years) of his 5 siblings and mother in a remote part of Washington Territory. However, he has come to Seattle to get the doctor; his mother is gravely ill. He meets Catherine instead; she tells Drew that the doctor has too many patients to leave. Drew's youngest brother decides to kidnap the nurse so their mother can have the care she needs. By the time Drew realizes he has extra cargo, they are too far along the way; Drew promises to take Catherine back the next day.
The family immediately realizes Catherine's value; life is hard in their solitary part of the territory and people usually die before they can get medical care. Drew and his brothers are loggers and that is one of the most dangerous jobs in the territory. The family decides Drew needs a wife and the lovely Catherine would be a wonderful choice. However, the couple -- individually -- have issues. Catherine is still suffering from the loss of her family and Drew is bowed by his protector role for his family.
This is a pleasant book to read -- and it is quick. Below is the list of novels in this Christian story series.
