This first unification of Scotland under one King. The wild Thorkel Amundason came of age when Canute was King of England. He is the complicated man behind the mythical MacBeth. Lady MacBeth was pure invention. Thorkel's bride, Ingibjorg or "Groa" is much more sympathetic and heroic. The old norse gods are having to move over to accept the new religion. Dunnet makes writes this eleventh century saga for more modern readers and history buffs. Lots of old norse names.
