Charles Knief's debut novel, winner of the St. Martin's Press "Best 1st Private Eye Novel Contest," pays sincere homage to John D. MacDonald's beloved Travis McGee. Knief is no John D., but he makes his own way quite nicely. His characters are strong, if a bit one-dimesional, and his plotting is fast and furious. Knief has a long way to go to walk in Travis McGee's footsteps, but his tribute to a true master stands on its own merits. I'll read the next one, and the one after that--then we'll see how it goes! Enjoy this good, solid story.
