I was unfamiliar with this series (of at least four books, this being the first) and I have worked with many teens wishing to improve their reading skills in order to hack junior college. It is cleverly done, a novel with vocabulary words interspersed (printed in bold face type) and a definition printed as a footnote at the bottom of the page.
"The girl grabbed Cheryl by the shoulder and spun her around. Cheryl seemed 'appalled' that anyone would dare touch her. She flicked her eyes over the gorgeous girl, 'appraising' her 'rival', and didn't seem as impressed as I had been. She looked pretty disgusted, actually."
'xxxx' signifies bold face type....
