What motivates a lord to spurn his title? To remain invisible until declared dead by his family? And what changes his mind to want to embrace his life again? These intriguing questions were enough for me to remain engrossed in the story, but Edward and Free's attraction was a very mental affair. Their physical interest was subtle, almost downplayed by comparison, making the story feel imbalanced. Edward wrestled with issues of self-worth, which was rather frustrating at times, while Free was simply too independent for my taste. Overall, it felt overly clever with too little warmth. 3.5 stars.
