This Matthew Hervey adventure starts out rather slowly. He is in Italy with his sister, out of the army and mourning a tragedy in his life. Then circumstances change and he accepts an offer to return to the service. This also ties up some other loose ends from the previous novel in this series.
Hervey and his dragoon squadron are sent to India during the time of "The Company." Most of the squadron are raw recruits who cause some of the veterans problems in training and discipline. Yet all, except one or two, will prove themselves toward the end of the book when Hervey's men find themselves fighting against much greater odds in a long shot to prevent a war.
A slow start to this novel that builds up to an exciting ending. Of course, there are more loose ends, to be tied up in the next book in this series.
