I read Twilight in the hopes that it would defy the reviews of my college friends and turn out to be a good book. But, unfortunately, they were right... it wasn't. I can sum the book up in two lines for you. These are "make me a vampire" and the response "I can't." Of course, these lines are repeated amidst terribly predictable teenage angst and anguish throughout the entirety of the book.
And what's sad is that the writer would be good if her plot weren't so laughable and her vampire characters so flat and 'Gary Stu.' The plot itself begins about 300 pages in while Bella, her vampire boyfriend, and his family are all playing an exciting game of vampire baseball out in some random field, just in case you're looking for a reason not to read.
Overall, I gave this book one and a half stars. Reasons? The characters are flat and boring (sometimes really annoying, too, with their strange responses to ordinary situations); the ooey-gooeyness of the love scenes seems over-the-top, unrealistic, and even comical; and the plot doesn't make an appearance until three-quarters of the way through the book (it wasn't even worth waiting for, either).
If you're looking for an interesting read, you're a Harry Potter and Twilight sort of person, and you're my age (twenties and thirties), check out The Magicians (which is at least pretty average in plot and very good in writing style), the His Dark Materials series, or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Same entertaining qualities, but with actual substance. Go.
