This is our first look at Lucas, so after the high of the last book involving the much loved Duncan, those were big shoes to fill.
Lucas is the vampire lord of the Midwest Territory and he's fighting border battles with a neighboring sadistic vampire lord, Klemens. We've also got a bit of a subplot involving a sexy FBI agent, Kathryn, that is looking for her brother that went missing in Lucas's territory.
The Klemens plot is action packed and progresses the overall story arc of the series nicely. It seems like the Kathryn subplot was just thrown in as an excuse to introduce her as someone for Lucas to bang. Granted, no real complaints as the banging is nicely steamy steamy. But, I didn't really care for Kathryn as a character and she tended to turn Lucas into a lust-sick puppy sap of a vampire.
The epilogue hints at further unrest in the Midwest so maybe Kathryn & Lucas will grow on me a bit in book 7.
