Yes, I think the book was complex. Ward has to deliver a lot of setup and backstory in the first portion of the book; the reader is discovering 'the rules' along with the lead character, Jim Heron. Then you reach the cascade point - do not go past this point if you have cookies in the oven, children to pick up from school, or a job that requires your presence and active participation...
The book is loosely affiliated to the author's Black Dagger Brotherhood series but reading it first is not a requirement [although it is a wonderful series!]
My favorite image? The Demon seeing itself as a Free-Will Coach and the anti-Oprah...
