I forget when I read the first book in this trilogy, but it was awhile back. Unfortunately, you need to read these books close together. Despite a good memory, I had problems remembering what happened in the first book, which left me somewhat adrift in the second.
Fortunately, I won't have to remember any of it for the third book, as I won't be reading it. The author combines sci-fi and mysticism in this series. The second book starts with decent sci-fi, but soon leaves it all behind to concentrate on the mysticism. I finally just scanned the last few chapters to see where the plot was going and, even then, had problems following it. Frankly, I believe even the author had problems following the plot.
