One can definitely tell that Shatner was involved as Kirk is the driving force and everyone else is a bit player. Don't let the cover fool you; Picard has a minor part as little more than a cab driver for Kirk.
Many of the well known characters didn't ring true based on what I know of them from the T.V. shows and movies. Some aspects were there but then they would do something odd and out of character that would take me out of the story (e.g. Odo changing a limb into a claw like shape so he could crush a device to make a point to someone). The story is interesting but from my view it almost seems like someone had an idea for a sci-fi storyline and then pasted a Trek overlay on top to make it more marketable.
